And then eventually Tony agreed with me and they put out "Hillbilly Rock," and the poor thing, it wore its heart out going up those charts. If you put this out, it will get airplay.” But they put out his cover of "Cry Cry Cry.” That record just faltered in the 80s or something on Billboard. They were hesitant about putting out “Hillbilly Rock.” I was actually invited to one of the meetings and I said, “Please put this out. But the record company being a record company, they didn't. That's the dart in the bullseye.Īnd of course, he did sign with MCA and (producer) Tony Brown was fantastic.
I demoed everything at home…they were appalling demos, but for some reason, I think because they were so bad, they were quite easy to pitch, because any producer or artist knew they could do them a lot better….What was important about it was it did give us sort of a focus to Marty.īH: And really you were spot on. And then one day after he left, I came up with this thing called "Hillbilly Rock,” and I wrote it quite quickly. It was a wonder that he hadn't got a record deal. PK: And he himself was just so cool because he snorted up Roy Acuff just as much as he also had a bit of punk in him and was just a superb musician. He hadn't got the record deal, but, I think in my mind, I was trying to find a vein for him as a new something he could hang his hat on.
We obviously became friends, and he'd come over and we'd hum and strum. And after I moved to America in 1983, he got in touch with me shortly after I moved and asked if could he come over. He'd been coming to see me before he had his deal with MCA and of course, and I'd met him originally when he was with Johnny Cash.
He had a bit of an accident he banged his head…Marty and I had written a bit. But also I do recall poor old Marty, in filming it. PK: I'm not sure that I've ever seen the video. And I can't watch the video because I get up and try to do the dance! I start rocking with that thing more than I do with Michael Jackson. But y'all did it better than any song I've ever heard. I feel like it's kind of that groove, it's a basic time signature. You know who I wished I could have heard a version of that by? Elvis. I'm gonna pay the biggest compliment I can pay any songwriter. I'm surprised it hasn't been cut (more often). But first of all, your passion for it is somewhat ill-advised, but I do appreciate it (laughs).īH: Well, let me tell you something, I'm gonna disrespect you. Paul Kennerley: Yeah, I think I wrote it in 1990, only because I sort of remember the circumstances a little bit.
